Altering the position of the chin may be purely aesthetic, but has far more important effects. In fact, it's normal for the upper lip to touch the lower lip at rest, without any muscular effort. This facilitates nasal breathing, helps prevent snoring and maintains correct dental position by balancing tongue and lip muscles.

Chin surgery may be combined with other maxillofacial surgical procedures if this seems useful. The indication will of course be discussed with the surgeon and orthodontist during the pre-surgery consultations.

In certain cases, mentoplasty can be performed from the age of 10 to favourably influence facial growth.

TREATMENT

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic. After an incision in the mouth, the bony chin can be detached and its position altered. It is then fixed with a mini-plate or a screw. A dressing is applied to the chin for 24 hours.
In some cases, the chin can be modified by inserting a small prosthesis or injecting a fat extract taken from the knee. Liposuction of the chin can also be performed. The patient stays in hospital for a short time, sometimes on an outpatient basis.
In the aftermath, the tongue and chin appear "asleep" and look fat. These phenomena fade with time, depending on the individual.
