Abdominoplasty

Weight gain and loss, pregnancy or genetic predisposition may have had a negative influence on the appearance of your abdominal muscles.

In some cases, liposuction may be sufficient to restore your flat stomach. In other cases, the abdominal muscles will need to be tightened. Excess skin and stretch marks may also need to be removed. A partial or complete abdominoplasty may be the solution to your need for a flat stomach.

TREATMENT

Each surgeon adopts his or her own technique, adapting it to each case to achieve the best results. However, there are some common basic principles:
Incision: The incision layout, which corresponds to that of the future scars, has already been mentioned: in fact, it depends on the location and quantity of damaged skin: in practice, the greater the quantity of tissue to be removed, the longer the scar.
Liposuction: Excess fat can be removed by liposuction, and distended muscles re-tensioned. The remaining skin (above the navel) is re-draped downwards and can be "padded" to reattach it to the underlying muscular wall, thus improving re-tensioning (particularly of the upper portion) and enabling the detachment space to be closed off and the risk of effusion to be limited.

The intervention comprises three distinct phases:
- Liposuction of the abdomen: The surgeon begins by removing fat from the abdomen and flanks. Liposuction refines the abdominal wall around the stomach before removing excess skin.
- Abdominal surgery: In the case of minimal skin laxity, the surgeon performs a mini-abdominoplasty. The surgeon removes excess skin in the area below the navel, without touching the muscles. In the case of very significant skin sagging, the surgeon performs a full abdominoplasty. He removes the excess skin from the lower half of the abdomen and tightens the upper half, which is then stretched to cover an almost doubled surface area. The navel then emerges at its normal height, through an opening made in the lowered skin.
- Muscle tightening: The surgeon tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall. This tightening of the rectus abdominis muscles (diastasis) helps to recreate a strong abdominal belt, flatten the stomach area and refine the waistline.

Duration: 1 to 3 hours, depending on the size of the job.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

Advantages: Beyond the aesthetic improvement, which is often appreciable and sometimes even spectacular in terms of silhouette, abdominoplasty generally brings the patient a very clear improvement in terms of comfort.
What's more, the functional improvement and psychological well-being achieved help patients adjust their weight balance.

Disadvantages: Localized imperfections are not uncommon, but do not constitute real complications:
- These imperfections concern in particular the scar, which is sometimes a little too visible, sticky, asymmetrical or raised. In some cases, the scar can become enlarged, thickened or even keloid.
- The umbilicus may be imperfectly externalized́ and have lost some of its naturalness.
- Small lateral excesses of skin are sometimes seen.
- Some irregularities due to liposuction may persist
- Excessive tension at the edges of the suture may cause pubic hair to rise.

These imperfections are generally amenable to further treatment: surgical "touch-up" performed under local anaesthetic or extensive local anaesthetic from the 12th post-operative month, on an outpatient basis.

RESULTS & PRICING

Results: These can only be assessed one year after the operation. You need to be patient enough to wait for the scar to fade, and to keep a close eye on it during this period, with a consultation approximately every 3 months for 1 year.
